Casa Madera
Casa Madera is a community run workshop that transforms timber and bamboo into beautiful, sustainable and durable products. From a spoon to a home, Casa Madera’s artisans will work with passion and skill to turn any idea into reality.
Adjacent to Casa Congo’s lot in El Astillero, the Casa Madera workshop is a tropical destination with equipment and knowledge to produce exceptional craft and train local carpenters.
How it started
Casa Madera was born as a temporary workshop to build bamboo homes in response to Hurricanes Eta and Iota. Once the social housing programme was completed in 2022, Casa Congo decided to transform the site into a community hub that could create long-term economic and social value.
Thanks to a generous fundraising campaign initiated by Filippo Vicinanza, together with the hard work of two volunteers from Italy, Casa Congo was able to invest in new infrastructure, tools and equipment and launch Casa Madera as an independent carpentry business.
Today, Casa Madera is managed by Eddy Galán and Catherine Ruiz, who have turned it into a welcoming space for craftsmanship, learning and community. They produce and sell a wide range of handmade products to visitors, provide practical training opportunities for local children and young people, and serve exceptional food combining Italian traditions with Nicaraguan ingredients.
More than a workshop, Casa Madera is an example of how a humanitarian project can evolve into a locally managed enterprise that creates skills, income and opportunities long after the original project has ended.
