Disaster Relief
Since its inception, Casa Congo has been through 3 hurricanes. Hurricane Nate in 2017 and hurricanes ETA and IOTA in late 2020. The hurricanes left devastating effects on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua, from collapsed roads that cutoff supplies for communities to destroyed homes and tragic losses.
During these catastrophic events, Casa Congo puts all programs on hold and focuses resources on critical activities such as repairing homes, delivering food and sanitation products, supporting key logistic activities during the aftermath and providing emotional support to families.
During the hurricane aftermath of 2017 and 2020, Casa Congo raised $20,000 to deliver:
800 emergency food packs
650 sanitation packs
65 roof repair kits
During these challenging times, the community truly rallies together to support each other and the surrounding communities. Thankfully, Casa Congo’s bamboo structures are designed to withstand hurricanes and our agroecological garden transforms into a watershed that regenerates soil and filters stormwater to the ocean. During climate disasters, Casa Congo’s coliving space transforms into emergency shelters for displaced members of the community.
